Assessment and Evaluation – Are you already doing what’s needed?

Assessment and Evaluation – Are you already doing what’s needed?

How management can work ahead of incidents and look to avoid situations where a Hunt for Talent becomes a critical activity? The first recommendation was to start with assessments and evaluations of the enterprise. We describe a good first step in this series.

Before you start – face the realities of your enterprise/institution. Is the culture such that employees and talent are picked to be “good enough”? Is there a succession of staff and growth of talents? Are people “settled in” to roles and functions? Is the view of spending that “nothing but emergencies” gets funded, or is there a view to invest for the future of the enterprise? If there aren’t clear answers to these questions (with nuances) then a diagnosis of the enterprise will be incomplete at best.

How do we define assessment and evaluation? An assessment gathers up the data and state of the enterprise. Comparisons may be made with prior and future states of the enterprise with local information. An evaluation looks to the values in the data and the state of the enterprise compared to metrics and best practices looked at with a larger context and attempting comparisons with acknowledged standards and practices.

The next post will further define assessment and evaluation. It will also clarify the value and limits of self-assessment.
