The Indian market space for automotive vehicles is approximately 3.5M vehicles per year and ranks in the top 6 marketspaces globally. Approximately 1 in every 12 manufactured product export monies is earned by vehicle exports. The Make in India initiative has been supported by foreign direct investment from multiple manufacturers including Hyundai, Suzuki, Stellantis (Jeep, Dodge, Fiat, and Citroen), among prominent global enterprises that have or formerly had India-based operations. Indian-domestic and export facilities are operated by Ford, Hyundai, and Renault-Nissan near Chennai.

In 2020 Hyundai Mobis expanded its existing software and technology development center in India.


Stellantis plans to ship its SmartCockpit technology in the model year 2024 with lead development performed in Indian centers working with SmartCockpit partner Foxconn.

In addition to Indian-based vehicle research and development domestic manufacturers (like Tata and Mahindra) explorations by Chinese manufacturers (SAIC) are ongoing to expand competitive production in India.
