A few definitions are in order

EkaLore continues our series on the value and challenges of training as a way to improve staff productivity. Our first piece can be found here (add link). This piece defines what EkaLore means by “Over all” training, Process training. In addition, we discuss the value of formal training.

Over all Training — involves multiple levels of gaining domain knowledge and proficiency at a task. For example, in primary education, this is enumerated using terms such as numeracy, literacy (being able to talk and communicate), proficiency (using procedures well), and mastery (being able to combine and apply). Whereas in an enterprise, training to be effective needs to provide mastery of the local knowledge and know-how to mature an effective staff talent. “Over all” training requires more effort, time, and gains than just getting a task done.

Process Training — Training in work environments often focuses on process. If staff was asked “Which training session was useful?”, the chances are good that the training involved business processes. Good examples include how to deal with problems in local practice and training to help deal with other people internally (good communication in specific jargon, local use of references, and common computer application concepts). Good process training is especially valuable and can be a step closer to “overall training.”

Formal Training is more efficient, especially if there are multiple people who need the same training. If there are 6-7 people working in a team and everyone needs to know the subject of training, it is simply more time efficient for the trainer to repeat the material once rather than six more. For cross-training to be efficient in a combined group of 3-4, then having each person teach the group at the same time is better than teaching each of three other people three more times. Efficiency is better, and so is training quality taught in even a slightly more formal fashion.

The next post in the series lays out a few definitions of different types of training. You can find this and other similar articles at www.ekalore.com/hunt-for-talent
