India in the Driver's Seat

Mercedes-Benz (MB) Research and Development India is leading the research and implementation of “digital luxury”. Mercedes-Benz sees digital luxury as a key brand value for global sales. MB is pursuing development of a new operating system “MB.OS” to implement the software and artificial intelligence (AI) features of digital luxury. Major staff and technology expansions will continue as MBR&DI is the key global center for large scale efforts by MB. MB will use software features to globally transform products and revenue models MBR&D India will be the key talent pool for MB to execute the transformation.

MB now expends more than 10 staff millennia (> 10,000 persons per year) on software engineering and related on MB.OS. The investment in the Indian development centers is paralleled by investment in the smaller German development center in Sindelfingen where new facilities alone cost more than USD$217M.

MB will spend billions of Euros on MB.OS software and AI features leading to a launch of MB products in 2024. Additional growth in Indian staff is still progressing. In 2021 MB detailed plans including adding 3,000 software engineers dedicated to MB.OS. The Indian development center will see Senior Program Managers, Technical Leadership, and Vehicle Development Leaders managing large talent pools in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Additional development work for MBR&D is done in China, Germinay, Israel, Japan, and the USA. It will need to compete for leading edge talent and concentrate staff with expertise into Indian operations to achieve product and platform goals in 2024 and beyond. MBRDI is the key global development center for MB’s software-centric approach.

Our next several posts about Mercedes-Benz R&D will focus on the finances and the tech rather than the location of the research.
