"Prepping for Take off"


The little company had a verbal agreement with a distributor. As they waited for the written contract, they thought about how they could sell their product outside the retail channel. Not competing with the distributor or the big retailer while increasing direct sales was their objective.


Jim, Adam, and Susan met one afternoon to talk about selling the product outside of the retail channel. Susan talked about using social media to attract a following for the widget and the brand. Adam proposed direct sales to public sector institutions. Jim was enthusiastic about corporate sales.

Of course, they would have a website and would take orders directly. Not to compete with distribution or retail, but to have a presence and a place for consumers to learn about the product.


A few weeks later the distributor came back with their contract. The team was a little surprised.
