Alien Sighting: Huawei in EV Land

One of the recurring topics of EkaLore's "Alien Invader" series has been the rise of Tesla and other new EV manufacturers. We've been analyzing and providing notes on vehicle manufacturers' strategies as the global energy marketplace transitions. The transition has caught global giants off guard and allowed newcomers to capture profit and market share.

The thesis of the Alien Invader series is that with the proper resources, know-how, and marketing, companies from entirely different marketplaces can suddenly enter and dominate them. Many consider Huawei to be “just” a tech company. Today's release looks a quick look at Huawei's AITO (Adding Intelligence To Auto) series of vehicles.

Huawei is currently focused on launching in China's rapidly growing electric vehicle/new energy vehicle markets. As a colossal global tech enterprise, it is likely Huawei will take these products to the global market.

Huawei has moved aggressively to use its technology platforms experience in computing and communications platforms to add to its ~USD$300M sales per year in vehicle/transportation related revenues. Huawei has branded a series of vehicle electronics kits AITO (auto with an 'I' instead of the 'u').

In a series of collaborations with vehicle manufacturing partners, Huawei has teamed up with Seres Group (initial partner), Anhui Jianhuai Automobile Group, BAIC Motor, and Chery Automobile. Huawei's HarmonyOS is also used for the infotainment features in Geely (Zhejiang Geely Holding Group) Geometry Series of vehicles. The announced goal for Huawei is to provide electronics and solutions for a full range of vehicles, from passenger sedans to SUVs and multipurpose vehicle product platforms.

Sales growth for the initial Seres Group grew from less than 15,000 (initial launch product SF5) to 80,000 vehicles (including Seres M5) in 2022, with new platform products reaching the marketplace. The announced goal is 1,000,000 vehicle production per year by 2026. (For comparison’s sake, in 2022, GM sold 39,096 EVs in the US, and Tesla delivered 1.31 million cars globally)

The Smart Car products are a luxury turbocharged crossover SUV with a 1.5L generator for an electric drive system (motors and displays provided by Huawei) and an 88KWH ternary lithium battery. These products are designed and built for the Chinese market and its rapid growth in New Energy Vehicles.

The AITO product supports include software operating the vehicle, energy management, and infotainment. The enterprise positions AITO Wenjie, now rebranded as "Huawei Wenjie," for smart vehicles. This is seen as a "smart car ecosystem," contributing to other enterprises' development of vehicle platforms.

Our next installment focuses on Huawei's Harmony OS tech. You can find other pieces that touch upon the invasion of the classic ICE (internal Combustion Engine) industry by Tesla and other new EV entrants at www.ekalore.com/alien-invaders
