Alien Sightings – Amazon Cloud revenue in perspective

In our last post, EkaLore discussed the sheer magnitude of Amazon’s retail business revenue and its investments in that business. This post compares Amazon’s Cloud Services segment to other major industry players.

Let’s consider the other major players in the cloud segment — Alibaba, Microsoft, IBM, and Google. Alibaba Cloud Q3 2021 revenue grew 33% YoY (to 10%, ~$3.1B, of Alibaba), Microsoft Cloud FYQ2 2022 revenue grew 29% YoY (segment $18.33B, Azure rate 46%), IBM Hybrid Cloud Q4 2021 revenue grew 20% YoY (segment $20.2B FY, Q4 $6.2B), Alphabet/Google Cloud Q3 2021 revenue grew 45% YoY (segment $13.67B 9 months, Q3 $4.99B). Segment GAAP reporting for Microsoft and IBM includes multiple revenue streams (some software and support).

Amazon estimates at FactSet has growth of 13.2% to $142.1B for the calendar Q4 2021. Amazon 10-Q non-AWS Q1 2021 was $50.9B, Q2 2022 was $52.7B, Q3 was $93.99, and Amazon guidance expects overall revenue growth from Q3 2021 of $110.1B to Q4 2021 between $130B and $140B in the holiday shopping season for all other combined operations. During Q3 2021 Amazon AWS ‘Cloud’ sales grew 39% QoQ to $16.11B. If AWS growth continues at a guesstimate of 30% to $20.9B for 4th qtr 2021, it will be about 16% of total Amazon revenues for Q4.
