Our previous post introduced Samsung Biologics, an entrant into the CDMO marketplace from another category. This post discusses three key choices Samsung made to drive their growth.


Samsung Biologics made three strategic choices that drove their growth. The first was the decision to enter a specific part of the pharmaceutical marketplace: contract manufacturing. The second decision was to adopt a customer focused operational process speeding tech transfer from their customers. The third was the decision to build out 24/7 high volume production capability. In addition, Samsung leveraged its knowledge leading to regulatory approval for plants 18 -24 months faster than its competition. Expanding its capacity faster than their competitors and with better operational process got customers to market faster. Samsung has proven all three of these choices correct.


These choices deliver dramatic results for Samsung Biologics. They have become a critical Covid-19 treatment supplier. Taking on a $362M contract with Via Biologics, and $231M from GSK, in early 2020, Samsung is now the global volume manufacturer for GSM/Via Xevudy (sotrovimab) monoclonal antibody treatment for Omicron Covid-19. Biogen developed the manufacturing process for Xevudy to enable Samsung Biologics produce the high-volume drug substance, fill and finish, and ship the drug.


Not only is Samsung working with GSM and GSK, but it’s also a global partner for Moderna, performing fill and finish operations for the Covid-19 vaccine. Drug substance production began in August 2021 for the Moderna mRNA vaccine. Samsung Biologics is positioning as key contract manufacturer for new drugs and especially mRNA-based drugs.


In an ongoing relationship with Eli Lilly, Samsung Biologics was a key supplier that turned on production of a Covid-19 monoclonal antibody in 5 months.
