To date our Alien Invasion examples have been largely domestic. Alien Invasions can occur anywhere! The key indicators for an Alien Invasion are:
1) Transitions due to technology changes
2) Markets where profits can be disproportionately made by breaking up business models and traditions (“disintermediation”)
3) Expertise, how-to knowledge, and customer relationships are already present or can be a developed capacity
Outcome: Alien Invasions, entry of new domestic competitors, and intricate regulatory/legal conflicts will disrupt Indian business-to-business and business-to-consumer merchant channels.
An example where this is happening is the Reliance/JioMart Alien Invasion into the traditional Indian retail distribution and selling networks. The Indian retailing and business-to-business market may have multiple Alien Invasions going on at the same time as Wal-Mart has purchased control of FlipKart, Amazon has expanded, and Facebook is working with JioMart. Investments by each of these market Alien Invaders is measured in $Billions. Complex tactics include partners in ventures (Amazon/Future), Indian domestic market players like Tata/BigBasket, controlled by multinationals (WalMart/FlipKart), and growing presence (Amazon/???).
Our next post will focus on Reliance/JioMart.
