An Alien has Already Landed?

Updated: Jan 18, 2022

Sometimes Aliens hide in plain sight. In previous releases, EkaLore described Alien Invaders that disrupted profits, then widened market share, and then passed by incumbent dominant market players. In the area of technology changes, we’ve described the rise of digital imaging as one of the market spaces where this occurred. This series explores one of the potential casualties of the classic photo film market, and how they invested their way into a completely new marketplace.

At the height of competition, Japan’s FujiFilm was a top competitor to Kodak in the photographic film market. Unfortunately, film demand dropped precipitously starting in 2000. FujiFilm chose to apply their expertise to another high-quality, high precision manufacturing marketplace by entering the pharma industry. Though the company started out in one market in 1934, it decided in 2008 to enter the life sciences markets by buying Toyama Chemical. They were setting the stage to become a player in the Contract Development and Manufacturing organization for the pharma industry. It’s grown into a sizable business today.

In our next post, Fujifilm’s DioSynth Biotechnologies’s origins are traced. It will show how FujiFilm invaded the biotech space with little or no fanfare.
