An Alien has Already Landed #2

Updated: Jan 18, 2022

In our 1st post, we talked about Aliens that hide in plain sight. We began the tale of FujiFilm’s move into the pharma world. Today we provide some history of the company it acquired, DioSynth.

FujiFilm’s unit DioSynth Biotechnologies is not a high-profile company. A 10-year 80/20 partnership with Mitsubishi, FujiFilm’s DioSynth is a major Contract Drug Manufacturing Operation (CDMO) for the pharma industry.

DioSynth began in 1923 in the Netherlands. It specialized in the isolation and extraction of Insulin from Bovine Pancreas. In 2005, it became part of Organon, which itself was sold to Schering-Plough in 2007. In 2009 Merck merged with Schering-Plough. Later that year Merck purchased Avecia Biologics and merged it with DioSynth Biotechnology to create the MSD BioManufacturing network.

In March 2011 Fujifilm Corporation bought Merck BioManufacturing Network. It named its purchase “Fujifilm DioSynth Biotechnologies.” Primary enterprise sites for DioSynth are now in Texas, North Carolina (USA), Billingham (UK), and Hillrod (DK) interestingly, it has no manufacturing presence in Japan.

We finish the story we started here in our next post – An Alien has Already Landed #3
