Are Tech Layoffs a Golden opportunity for the Indian Economy?

EkaLore’s previous post (click here) suggested that the massive layoffs and the reduction in force of the H1-B labor force in the US present multiple short-term and long-term opportunities for India’s tech economy.

Today’s post describes our view of these opportunities.

The opportunities for India and Indian initiatives like “Made in India” are huge:

I. Applying talent availability to locate key next-generation technology initiatives in India (enterprises like Google, Microsoft, HPE, Mercedes, VW, Amazon, Meta, etc.)

Key advantage: People familiar with foreign enterprises' operations and workstyles

Key Challenge: Acted upon by individuals, not the Indian government or enterprises, and peoples’ mobility is constrained by legacy/historical, cultural, geographic, and familial factors

Potential Gains: generations of global technology development residents in India

II. Apply Talent - Focus Indian talent on problems and solutions where shortages of diverse talents were keeping leaps ahead to “breakthroughs.” In other words, this may be the time to add luminaries to the Indian equivalents of Bell Labs or Xerox Parc

Key Advantage: Many diverse competencies and expertise (experienced know-how) are available, including people from the most advanced global enterprises

Key Challenge: Talents are those in demand across many tech enterprises, and management skills and organizational structures are critically important to the success

Potential Gains: Creating an institutional structure where global enterprises create societal value for generations (advanced AI, computational bio/pharma/genetics, robotics, automation, productive R&D labs to applied engineering, global centers of competency and domain knowledge)

III. Apply sheer numbers - Invigorate key industrial, commercial, and governmental initiatives with an inrush of talent and experience large enough to “move the needle” on these initiatives!

Key advantage: Talent has local competencies/context with global-level skills and advanced domain knowledge

Key Challenge: Selecting the right talent and quickly transitioning the talent into large initiatives (defense, petro/chemical/pharma, telecommunications/5g/datacenters, finance/trade, improvements in government services, agribusiness)

Potential Gains: Overcome structural barriers to sufficiency, increase returns of network effects in Indian marketplaces, deepen societal participation using technological progress

IV. Create competitive advantages for Indian enterprises on a one-time basis against global competitors. (Defer earnings for three quarters. Get some sales)

Key advantage: Leverage ongoing sales and relationship efforts on a grand scale (using brainpower instead of Chinese funding in large-scale initiatives), substitute Indian talent for talent interrupted by Covid-19, Ukraine conflict, USA/EU short-term thinking, and create paths for young talents to grow in global marketplaces.

Key Challenge: Acting fast enough and with sufficient resources to make a material difference

Potential Gains: Capability and experience to adapt and compete in global landscapes where future years' turbulence can be confidently addressed

EkaLore's next post will provide a little background information about these recommendations.
