BOTE’s are a way of cutting through complex industry jargon by oversimplifying to extract a bigger truth.
When you hear the word Utility, a giant factory complex with wires spanning out in all directions probably comes to mind. What if someone created a Utility without a generating plant, without investing in transmission wires, or without putting distribution transformers behind houses? Better yet someone created a Utility that can sell at 10 or more times the rate/prices of a traditional Utility company during peak times!
Tesla Energy is the ‘someone’. Tesla is an Alien Invader to the Utility industry! Tesla is taking their resources, know-how, and people and getting ready to invade a completely different industry and suck the profit right out of it. Furthermore, they’re doing it in plain sight. Complete with state, federal, and public announcements.
It wouldn’t be a BOTE release without a few numbers. Tesla is estimated to have 50,000 Powerwalls in California. It’s currently conducting a beta to sell electricity back to the grid. The Powerwalls+ have a rated capacity of 13.5 KWH with about 10 KWH usually available to send back to the grid. Peak demands in California early evenings (when solar is going down) (about 3 hours/day) for Tesla Energy could provide up to 450 MWH per day. And more electricity to the grid as more Powerwalls or Tesla’s are connected! That’s a nice little Utility. A Utility Tesla Energy that was financed by other people!
In our next few posts, we’ll layout a few more numbers and models to further explain how Tesla’s model could change the Utility marketplace.
