There are reports in popular media linking ransomware and hacking attacks on renewable energy enterprises in Europe. The relationship drawn supposes attacks as politically motivated during the current period of conflict. EkaLore considers the consequences of these attacks from additional perspectives to point to actions enterprises must take immediately.
EkaLore has previously released analysis on Web Infections in different formats. (See “The Hunt for Talent” serial lore talking about the internal politics often accompanying an attack.) The focus is on utilities (energy, water, public services) although the enterprises attacked can certainly range from governments to small home-based businesses. In every enterprise some responsibility and actions have to be taken to protect value.
Before anything else – brought home many times in the last few years – all enterprises need to spend time and money on back-up (and making redundant copies of important data and files) as well as testing those procedures. If management – ask very specific questions and ask when the last time restoring from a backup was tried – many times the answers won’t be to your liking.
