Dealing with the Coming Layoffs in IT

Updated: Sep 25, 2020

Reductions in enterprise workforces are happening. The most visible initial reductions are already happening to front-line service workers in hospitality, travel, and retail services but reductions in IT staff are happening as well. They are happening in ‘traditional’ enterprise IT workforces, and in “non-IT’ areas such as sales, engineering, and manufacturing. Since only about 50% (or less) of technical roles are occupied by traditional enterprise IT, it is no surprise that large numbers of IT workers across multiple business functions will be affected.

As bad as the planned layoffs are for IT, forced changes will be worse. These changes will come from people directly affected, by Coronavirus, by illness, by family or by simply being trapped where they can’t work. Any discussion of dealing with reductions in force must cover the cases where people can communicate – and where people are simply no longer reachable.

What has to be done:

1) The ‘onboarding’ steps must be reversed

2) The ‘turnover’ of job-based tasks must occur

3) The ‘process roles’ must be reallocated, notified, and trained

4) The ‘backups’ must be appointed and notified
