Dynamic India - The Spoken Word

The rich diversity of Indian cultures can be seen in the wide use of more than 30 spoken languages with more than 1M people. The Indian state governments recognize 22 scheduled languages. Linguistic specialists have identified more than 415 dialect variations across the country.

In this release, EkaLore looks at the strengths that the diversity of languages brings to the Indian marketplace.

The opportunity for a Dynamic India is to apply the necessity of computer interactions in many languages (dialects) to advance the capabilities and understanding of computer-based systems. Instead of the cultural and technical ‘shortcut’ of assuming a single underlying language model, the diversity of Indian requirements can make the capabilities of computer developments more powerful as a common capability.

A simple use case sees individuals traveling across India needing to interact with official government websites and transit information. The preference to work in your own language and cultural references will always be present. For computer applications and web designers, the complexity of supporting multiple types of interactions and functions is ever-present. In one US transit application, adding one more language to support a new migrant community was painfully expensive. For many good reasons (not the least of which is computer application implementers really don’t want to do the same functions over and over) [economic and cultural] equality of functions across languages and cultures is a legal and regulatory compulsion – even if the total number is initially limited.

Next up – A little background about why multi-lingual development is costly and complex.
