EV Production Show Down 3

Updated: Nov 14, 2022

This is the third post in a series of 4 about Tesla’s production efforts vs the rest of the industry. You can find the first two posts at www.ekalore.com/alien-invaders.

A classic Alien Invader from EkaLore’s point of view, Tesla has broken the “rules” that governed industry incumbents. We talked about Volkswagen’s production efforts, today we take a brief look at Volvo

Volvo has discussed a parts reduction ratio of 100 to 1. The Volvo perspective is for large-scale metal casting as the material cost is competitive with steel and cheaper than mixed materials. Volvo anticipates weight savings of 15-20% as well as an improvement of 100% of factory fall-off direct reuse by re-melting (50% reused of original materials, compared to an estimated 55% efficiency of steel materials in the plant where 45% is scrapped). Volvo anticipates savings from assembly work, work-in-process transport, and reduced machining/finishing. The marketplace will see if the economic efficiency and longevity of vehicles justify large-scale metal casting.
