Grow Your Own Alien - 4

This is the 4th of a five post series. To view the entire series, go to www.ekalore.com/alien-invaders

Our earlier posts provided background and justification. The implications for an Alien Invader of a knowledge-driven/software reliant product are huge!

1) Business models go from ‘buy once maybe service’ to subscription (including remote shut off) revenue models

2) Data is enormously big (theoretically the central compute databases could have the GPS coordinates of every plant – and how it performed). Business relationships driven by data integration of time-domain (past, present, multiple future choices) and delivery of modeled data (what changes in weather forecast could drive choices of farm operations, seed, and chemical buys) is a future business.

3) The business lines can sell data (governments, agribusinesses in the supply chain, etc) combined with other data (remote satellite sensing, weather, financial market data, historical and projected values, dynamic conditions (how much sun/rain/temp, how long, when) in crop cycle.

4) Supply and logistics chains are transformed (software updates over the air (ala Tesla)), spare parts at military vehicle complexity, self-repair equipment, and maintenance management, integration with supply chains for chemicals, seed, and water.

5) Capital availability – ERP applications at large enterprises are depended on by lenders to determine working capital requirements and cash flow at borrowers. Could farm loans may become dependent on crop history and modeling not always known even to the farmer.

And these are just the start. What is the importance of knowing that a competitive or trading nation-state had crop failures before even its own government knows?
