Huawei in EV land 2

The first post in this two-part series described Huawei’s Alien Invasion of the EV marketplace by providing a “smart car ecosystem” to support other manufacturers development of vehicle platforms. Similar to other major manufacturers such as Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, Huawei is developing an OS for the EV platform.

Huawei's HarmonyOS technology is the core of the software-focused product offerings and branding. HarmonyOS was developed as a next-generation operating system software when Huawei was denied access to USA technology because of sanctions. This removed the previous use of Android OS (AOSP) technologies at the heart of product offerings. The Harmony OS includes a development toolchain, specific programming development experiences, and a different technology stack where the Linux kernel is only one of the highly related software product component technologies.

Huawei is taking a distinct track on the technology, market objectives, and targets for HarmonyOS and its related technology ecosystem. Used in more than 50,000 different devices in many market segments and applications, HarmonyOS uses a multi-kernel and dispersed approach to managing and delivering compute, storage, networking, and operating system services to developers and end-users. This approach separates Huawei from VW, Mercedes, Tesla, GM, Toyota, or Ford. The investment being made by Huawei likely mirrors the investment levels in competing operating systems environments. The marketplace will likely see a long competition as Huawei works in a more protected market (China), where Samsung's Tizard has emplaced in Korea or Alphabet's multiple projects.

Time will tell whether Huawei’s car OS approach succeeds compared to its competition.
