Lesson from 4 Things you did Yesterday (part 1 of 5)

This is the start of posts relating to my previous “Do It Today” note on Enterprise Information Technology (IT) and the Novel Corona Virus-2019 (Covid-19, coronavirus).

Enterprise IT infrastructure optimized for large campus work environments and physically concentrated work teams is inadequate for new needs from coronavirus era work (some networks are failing to perform). Enterprise IT teams are learning that cutting costs (for backup bandwidth, additional capacity to monitor, surveil, and protect networks/servers) left problems that are hard to fix right now. Network and Data Communications TCO means balancing effective protections against costs – not just making spend smaller. More people working “remote” means that VPN-usage is straining capacity (problems with how many VPN users at the same time) and lowering performance (how fast things get done over VPN compared to on-campus). The TCO costs of supporting a surge of infrequent VPN users (and the usual desktop problems from BYOD VPN installs) are now biting some enterprise IT groups.
