Plant and Engineering IT – 7 Things to do today - Part 2

In our last blog, we discussed aspects of Plant and Engineering IT that need attention especially now during tough times. Each of the 7 points below could be expanded into paragraphs at least, but they are a good starting point for discussion.

Things to take care of TODAY! (Ask, document, fix if you can.)

1) Backups aren’t. Backup now, backup often, backup everything.

2) Access and security controls have complications in the plant.

3) Technical roles and processes (support) aren’t defined or backed up.

4) Software and hardware, licenses, and support may not be properly tracked

5) Equipment attached to computers needs very expensive processes (calibration, certification, qualification) that are foreign to enterprise IT.

6) Ask and document first – before touching or doing

7) Have HR ask at every exit interview what ‘production essential’ function is going without backup.

Bottom line–Enterprise IT must reach out and understand Plant and Engineering IT before they have to. Otherwise, costs will be painful to production, products, and customer services.
