Post 21 – One-on-One with the CEO

The HR VP had passed no good news to the CIO in time for his one-on-one with the CEO.

“Talk to me about what you’ve gotten done.”

“The Breach Team has plugged the vulnerability that allowed the breach.

They are using a combination of home-grown and Open Source codes to address the requirements upgrades to the Guidelines. This is going to take some time to get done though.

I’ve met with each of the other departments to tell them what IT won’t be delivering as promised with new estimates of deliverables.

The GC has approved a new job description and HR delivered the first group of applicants. I’ve been back-and-forth with the CFO on budgets.”

“Fine, but what has gotten done with getting talent on board.”

“It’s still in HR’s hands. The first group only had three people in it and two were clearly too junior. The other person is already making more money than we can offer.”

“This is the priority. I have a Board meeting next week and I want action, not just people pushing paper and telling me what they can’t do. What do you need to make progress?”

“Then I need you to clear the priority for budget and talent searches with the CFO and HR.”

“I’ll write you all an email. When can I expect results?”

“HR has to find candidates. The CFO has said that a temporary talent from outside consulting is out of the question with the budget. The consultants want as much for 90 days as we want to pay an inside person in a year.”

“So, hire one away.”

“The talent already makes more than we’re going to offer.”

“Find one who wants to settle down for a career instead of going from gig to gig.”

“HR has gone to outside recruiters who have been told what to find.”

“It’s your priority. Work to get it done. We’ll meet the day before the Board meeting next week so we can go thru everything in my presentation.”

The CEO is focused on search results. No other progress will help the CIO. Meanwhile, other considerations are making themselves known.
