Post 33. A Visit from the CEO’s Trusted Advisor

In our last post, the CEO put the CIO in the hot seat and threatened his job if he didn’t make progress quickly.

After the CEO warned the CIO that he was on the edge, she called Millie and asked if she could visit with the CIO to gauge his state of mind after the warning. Millie agreed this was a good idea and told her that coincidentally she’d be in the area at the end of the day.

Millie reached out directly to the CIO later that day and set up a meeting.

She met the CIO in his office. Dressed in an expensive and tasteful suit, Millie came in and shook hands firmly with the CIO.

She smiled. “I serve on the hospital board. As you know, there is a lot of concern about the breach and its handling. I had a conversation with the CEO earlier this week, and I know that the situation is uncomfortable for everyone. I think I’ve got a pretty good view of the situation. What’s yours?”

The CIO gulped. “We’re under threat from regulators. The Hospital’s reputation is at stake. Adding in a new high-end security resource is going to show that we’re making changes to our security capability. What’s your view?”

Millie replied, “The CEO is under tremendous pressure to show progress.”

“Who can pressure the CEO?”

“The Board. Regulators. The list goes on, but what’s important for you as a frontline resource is that we need to get this security architect on board and to show progress soon so that we can to relieve that pressure. Can the CEO and I count on you?”

“Of course. I’m going do whatever I can to make us look better.”

Millie got up, shook the CIO’s hand, and left.

“Smoothest “you’re completely screwed, I’ve heard in some time,” he thought as she left the room. He smiled to himself at the thought.
