SVB - Unintended Consequences?

“But it’s too late to say you’re sorry

How would I know? Why should I care?

Please don’t bother trying to find her

She’s not there.” - She's not there - The Zombies 1964

Agility, resilience, and sustainability are the three qualities used by EkaLore to evaluate enterprise operation strategies. This release looks at the potential impact of the failure of SVB as a banker to many startup operations and possible shocks to enterprise information technology operations through disruption of the open source development community.

For Information Technology (IT) operations, the rapid changes from DevOps, DevSecOps, WebOps, and Cloud Apps often depend on code modules and large functions from small open-source or startup technology enterprises. This release looks at actions to take today as a result of the failure of Silicon Valley Bank.

Actions to take today:

1) Assign a senior developer to review all of the open-source code for critical functions. Have them compile a short list of 10-20 most critical places where the enterprise is now most vulnerable.

2) Ask key vendors what their resilience and sustainability plans were if the use of critical open source modules were no longer available or supportable.

3) Set aside resources to perform a code-level audit of critical functions to educate and inform management of resources to reduce vulnerabilities to a known level.

4) Choose levels of vulnerabilities affecting resilience. Put in place spending, attention, and resources to sustain resilience.

5) Identify talent and plan to sustain competencies to fix or repair open source modules if vendors and community support become unavailable.

EkaLore will release our analysis and notes regarding this issue to our clients and others first. We’ll be providing support for these goals on a first-come-first-served basis.

The next post in the series will consider why SVB's failure may pose a risk for enterprise software development.
