Vodafone Idea Problems - Vendor Effects

Our previous post discussed the failure of Vodafone to capitalize on its entry into the Indian marketplace despite substantial financial resources. This failure has implications for the wireless tech market vendors as well.

The narrowing of the Indian wireless market to four major carriers also squeezes wireless technology suppliers in a critical large market. The global opportunities to be the dominant supplier to networks with more than 100M users are becoming closed as choices are made for 5G network investments.

Vodafone has championed the Intel-based OpenRAN network infrastructure also tested by VI. The Indian government has indicated that it will effectively exclude Huawei and ZTE from being prime vendors in the 5G national rollouts. An explicit Indian government goal is to further deployment of 5G infrastructure to continue improving service. VI does not have an incumbent dominant technology partner like Jio (Samsung, Google) or Bharti Airtel (Nokia, Ericsson, Google). In mid-2021, before new regulations, VI had announced a 4G technology placement of Huawei gear (USD$50-55M). This placement comes as VI owes Huawei more than USD 100M.

The next post talks about the financial aspect of Vodafone Idea.
