Why Pfizer’s Covid Vaccine is a Business Success

Today we’ll all take in the news that Covid-19 boosters will become available to most adults in the USA. Pfizer will celebrate a business success while working at ‘desperation speed’ to get its product to the world. What is not much discussed is Why Pfizer has a business success. To understand the Why let’s look at the operational How.

If the problem given is:

Protect as many people as possible from serious illness and death!

… then the answers focus on speed and assuring things work.

How Pfizer has a business success came to three keys from what is known so far:

  1. Use enterprise strengths to move faster. Pfizer used prior expertise to advantage driving global enterprise processes, document procedures, and knowledge in meeting the needs of medical research scientists and regulators. Pfizer used the existing collaboration with BioNTech to bet on a technology already identified for a new type of vaccine.

  2. Solve problems using resources and technical know-how in trades for keeping times short. Pfizer used a lot of money, relationships, and management attention to solve problems. Systems/process engineering was key to solving issues coming from science (highest quality controls from materials to jab), logistics (a cold chain never scaled), data integration (rapid clinical data analysis, IoT logistics tracking, product traceability), and production (equipment and supplies).

  3. Apply resources needed. Redundancy and “just in case” spending was used to keep times short. Pfizer spent its own money to assure results instead of fighting for “just good enough” budgeting.

How Pfizer has succeeded (and where colossal competitors have fallen short) comes down to know-how, technology, and money. EkaLore looks at that elsewhere today as well.
