The next series of posts will discuss the best way to deal with an unpleasant situation: Who should be cut in your enterprise IT group due to the demand to reduce budget (and thus headcount). How do you deal with the fallout (and smaller budget)?

Previous Ekalore notes have discussed “Cut now and cut big”. Now, it’s time to pick and choose specific staff to cut. These posts will discuss the major ways cuts get decided, and how enterprise IT groups got to this point.

Premises and assumptions:

1) Enterprise IT (and other IT functions in marketing/sales, engineering, manufacturing, and the field) will get cut along with every other group in the enterprise (no safe harbor)

2) IT cuts will come as dollars, not as just headcount.

3) New costs for remote workers and security must be paid.

4) Cost-saving programs using cloud and new applications in the current fiscal year must go on.

5) Big cuts have already been put in motion at the initiative/project level.

Tomorrow we’ll discuss how to fill in the gaps even as you reduce headcount
