SomeDay

Updated: Sep 25, 2020

The day before someday has arrived – Someday you were going to fix this and that– now it’s too late

This series of posts will talk about how enterprises – particularly Enterprise IT - get caught in circumstances and make decisions – that seem right at the time – that lead to unwanted problems later. Enterprise IT gets caught with consequences more than other groups.

“Someday” has arrived. “Someday” facts to face (and how they came about)

Consequence: Somehow, the organization forgot an important work result. Legal and regulatory have no sense of humor. Security failures have career fatal consequences. If positions were left unfilled, if roles weren’t cross-trained, or there’s no internal backup available.

Someday: The work wasn’t that critical – a quarterly report, an annual filing, a renewal on a license. Now, the work isn’t done because the person whose job it was to make sure it ran has departed. The person (contract or employee) did it and it wasn’t a large task. Management in enterprise IT didn’t know, and now it got hit.

Now what: Actively search out and find important work results for legal, regulatory, compliance, or manufacturing (such as materials qualifications). You’d get to that someday. Now start today.

Checkbox item: The results of building out, using, and updating this list must be on people’s short-term objectives. Then, at most quarterly, this list must be explicitly checked by management.
